Your shader friend’s work isn’t completely lost. People get used to bad color and maybe don’t notice so much, but they *will* notice if one camera is different.

If we strive to make our work look and sound good on standardized monitors, and if manufacturers and setup techs try to get consumer monitors looking and sounding somewhat like the standards, then there’s a gradual tendency towards better looking and better sounding work. And maybe someday when we’re old, technology will improve and our old masters will look and sound really awesome (finally).

In addition, if we know what kinds of screwy monitors are out there (high contrast computer screens, speakers with no low end), then we can also compensate just-a-little-bit to make things work out better on the crappy monitors, too.
