NOTE: DO NOT DO THIS!

Can’t be more wrong than this. What makes it worse is that the offloads were done on a PC, and the drive is formatted, NOT Fat32, but NTFS…meaning that I can’t make changes…I can’t go in an FIX the names.

If you want something to be the date, the card, and the camera…it should be 040810_01A. That’s… April 8, 2010 – Card 1, Camera A. 040810_01B. That’s …April 8, 2010 = Card 1, Camera B.

My suggestion for date-based filename is always to do it the ISO-way… YYYY-MM-DD – that way it always sorts properly. Also should help to avoid any confusion between US dates and the rest of the world :)

Thank you! I’ve pretty much gotten every p2 job in incorrect folder formats. Understandable that people think they’re helping but they’re really not helping at all.

I’ve had the same issue with Canon 5d/7d folders.

First off…folders in folders in folders is just a lot of unnecessary mess. It’s like opening a box, to find a box, to find a box, to find a box, to find your files. Why the other 3 boxes? Use one. The others are waste, and time consuming.

Second, the NAME of the main folder you copy these files into must have a UNIQUE name. This will be the REEL name when the footage is imported…and that like like a tape name. It is how you track back to the originals. When I imported, EVERY SINGLE P2 import was labelled with CARD 1 as the reel. I had to go in and take a lot of time to change the reel numbers on all the footage to be the date and card and camera. Time wasted when I had no time to waste.

We get file-based media of all flavors. I ingest everything into CatDV, batch-rename {project code}-{reel, if present} ###.ext.

From there, I copy everything to a bare 1TB media drive (in a dual eSATA dock; format conversions happen here if needed), clone the drive w. SuperDuper, and the footy is ready to edit. I wipe the original media when it’s backed up (the clone goes to a vault).

I’m not a fan of super long filenames – that’s what metadata is for. Record dates are stamped in the file, for example. I wish we had IPTC for video.
