To elaborate a bit on the background of Offloader:

The original idea was to make something for one of my clients, who shoots Ikegami GF packs.
My biggest worry was the file management. (Those packs are way larger and way more expensive than a DSLR flash card...)

The DSLR part came later. It was never intended to win on speed.
However, it is fairly fast since it can put multiple QT exporters at work at the same time.
And, you have to take into account that the render / transcode starts during the shoot, and continues during your trip home. Of course the average laptop used on location won't be as fast as your studio edit machine, but it does get a tremendous headstart.
Let alone you don't have to do anything anymore when you get home, just plug the laptop to decent power...
Power is something to be carefull, when transcoding, Offloader can get the processor(s) to run at nearly 100%.
That WILL have huge impact on battery life. So have a second (external) battery pack, or use your car battery to give it some extra juice...

But again, i haven't done any speed comparison with other apps as it is beside the point this workflow is about...

This product came out right as I was in the middle of converting a massive amount of footage from a 5D and a 7D for the film I'm editing right now. Though it may have made my life easier, I found that using Compressor to convert footage into ProRes works fine too. In fact, if you set up a virtual cluster, you can utilize all the horsepower your system has to offer. Ultimately I don't think Grinder would have made things go any faster for me. Perhaps if I was on a MacPro and running FCP 7...

You can read all about my adventures in converting 5D/7D footage at my blog.

Funny you mention Video Toolsed Andy, as they have just released a similar app that also does the cloning from your media card. Probably not as fast, but an interesting option to investigate.

Thanks for the write up Shane ... maybe this in cohorts with QTChange from VideoToolShed's Bouke Vahl could work well? QTChange is a free helper app that (amongst other things) will read the real and timecode info from the THM file's in the original camera media directory and apply them to the converted media. If you've not already played with this then you should check it out, could be useful, at least until MB update Grinder to add in this functionality :

Let us know if and when you test the 720p60 to 1080p60 cross conversion ... a real nice option (for some of us) would be 720p60 to 1080i60 cross conversion too, so if you're talking to the RedGiant folks then feel free to pass it on :-)

Cheers
