You can't use the MXO2 Mini to output to tape, as there is no deck control. I haven't tried it with the USB adapter...might be worth a shot.

VCR? Yeah...same as a DVD recorder.

I have one question and sorry for my ignorance, but thats the reason I read you.

I work now in a TV station in Ecuador, we use Media Composer 3.5 and Mojo and Nitris DX to output to tape. With this new version and the Matrox Mini will I be able to output to tape also? You said it can be connected to a DVD for client aproval, so what about connecting it to a VCR?

I work also as a freelance, and I have Media Composer software only, and want to update to something where I can output to tape. Thanks

Simple question with hopefully a simple answer. I have a new AVID MC 5 update. I would like to defeat the automatic Trim Mode when I shift along the timeline to the next cut. I would rather it just be source-edit mode, not the auto-trim.

Anyone know?

[...] Avid was kind enough to offer me the opportunity to beta test Media Composer 5.0. And in doing this I not only got to play with all the new features, but also help work out the bugs. And I got a chance to get more comfortable with how the application works. Media Composer 5.0 (MC5) has a LOT of new features, and I tried to test as many as I could, but I limited myself to the key areas that most impacted me and my editing style and workflow. If you want to see a full list of these features, you can see my NAB preview here. [...]

"OPINION: Now how this works is very familiar to FCP users. AMA will just access the files where they currently reside. Just like importing QTs into FCP. Avid MC just points to the media where it lies and works with it. Move the files, and the connection is broken. "

Actually, with AMA all the clips are assigned a UMID (Unique Metadata ID?) so the relationship between the master clip in the application and the media files in the folder is not based on file name and it's location. At least that's the way it has been working with contents of an XDCam disc that I've copied into a folder

[...] First let me mention hardware. And no, this hardware isn’t something Avid makes. They are now opening up to third party vendors…specifically Matrox. Avid Media Composer 5.0 now works with the Matrox MXO2 Mini. But not for capture, but for monitoring on a large monitor. This is so you can save money on multiple systems. You can have the one or two bays that you use to capture/output, and the rest…say the other 8 – 30 bays… can utilize the MXO2 mini to throw that image on the nice big client monitor. Before, if you wanted this, you’d have to equip each bay with Nitris DX or Mojo DX boxes, and that can be VERY expensive. Especially if you don’t utilize those machines as capture machines. There are many places that have Mojos just for monitoring, and that is a tad much. Add the MXO2 mini for roughly $450 and BAM! There’s your inexpensive monitoring. read more… [...]

Terrific summary, Shane. I was so busy checking out the color correction offerings that I had too little time at the Avid booth. I'm really pleased with the ProRes support, as you point out it'll make moving projects back and forth between Avid and FCS a _lot_ easier. I was pleasantly surprised at how much ProRes support there was throughput the south hall at NAB. Anyhow, thanks again!

AWESOME, Avid!
What really sells it for me is the new trackbased RTAS feature. This will make mixing on the Avid way easier. Stereotracks… AHHHH! AMA… OHHHH! MXO2 Mini… YEAH! A quantum leap for Avid.
I love it.

Thanks for that Shane!
Many things on the timeline and operationally are looking a bit like a page out of the DS playbook and UI. From my point of view that's a good thing. DS has some great all around tools. I never understood why Avid didn't do this sooner but glad they did. I don't care where the tools come from. It is about making editing easier so that we can be more creative and productive. I think Avid is smart to realize this.

Great re-cap Shane.

I don't think Avid is 'giving in' to Apple I think they are giving their customers what they want. And, like you said, you don't have to use the new features if you don't want to.

this. is. awesome!

I've been wanted to buy Avid 4.0 because of all that i've read about it - mainly being able to handle many resolution and frame rates in real time. But this new release sounds amazing. The mxo2 mini, open timeline, and working with QT files are what's selling it for me.
