[...] Lately I have seen more friends and ex-coworkers remaining out of work because they don’t know how to edit on an Avid MC, or with FCP. Recently a couple shows I have been working on shut down, in fact I am finishing up the online of the last few. But the editors of those shows have been done for a while, and are in the market for new jobs. And one of the producers here has many many job leads that he gave all of us. The issue is that pretty much all of them are for companies that use Avid MCs. And a couple editors don’t know how to use the Avid MC, so the job leads are pretty much dead for them. read more… [...]

So it is only a "pro" environment when you have multiple bays? The single bays for Cable Specials don't count? Or the three bay setups used in network drama's or comedies don't count?

SCRUBS, was FCP. Bunim/Murray, one of the largest reality production houses in the COUNTRY is ALL FCP. 75-100 seats, all working on XSAN...shared media. NFL FILMS, guess what? Are all FCP. LEVERAGE, on TNT...shot on RED, edited on FCP. Want more? I got more. And a LOT of those jobs pay scale, which is $2500/$3000 per week.

But these are tough times. Not MANY places pay that much....even reality NETWORK pay is decreasing. But, if you are editing a NETWORK show, you are getting that, and more. Bulk of the work is for cable networks, and they never...well, rarely....paid $3000 or up. I am on an Avid job now, not getting $3000. I was on one last year, didn't get $3000 And these were major cable networks both. But then I have seen shops, with Avid, paying under that...$2000...$1500...for editors.

The system no longer dictates the price of the editor. Well, some place try, but when they tell me that "the job pays less because we are using FCP" or "because we are using Avid Express Pro," I laugh. I don't get paid less because the tool costs less...sorry. That is faulty logic.

Oh, and I am in Los Angeles.

Yes I am a pro editor in LA, have been editing professionally since 1997. I am a member of MPEG, the Editors Guild. Curious what the ratio of Avid to FCP is in Los Angeles pro TV market? Any ideas?

My experience is that I have never been offer a real "Pro" ($3000/wk plus) FCP job. All the jobs are Avid. Which is fine with me I know Avid better than FCP. Only FCP jobs I hear of are small, indie, projects, often for less rate too. Maybe this is because Avid works better in a pro environment, meaning where there are 5-15 edit bays in a production, all linked together via Avid Unity, multicam shoots, several cams, tons of footage.

Anyone have any sense of pro FCP work in LA? thanks....

i do avid since 98 and took up FCP in 05. still i feel much more comfortable with avid (as it makes me feel more secure, cause let's name it: FCP and meta data… hmmm not so good yet!), but i'm doing like 90% FCP jobs at the moment. so my wallet feels more secure with FCP at the moment.

a good newbie resource for avid is http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/avid-tips-and-techniques/id274161778 . as it really starts from ground up (like use of attic, superbin, toolsets etc.). just a few episodes, but very good to learn the basics of how the avid works.

I completely agree and I'll actually take it a step farther and say that also learning at least the basics of common post tools is beneficial. I'm not a Photoshop or After Effects wizard by any stretch, but I can do the basics many times the basics are good enough just to tweak something (or to give a producer/client/director a rough idea of what it will look like). Case in point, I recently did some online tutorials for Blender (free 3D app) and learned how to make 3D text (like in the TV show Fringe). I also got started w/Apple Color the same way about two years ago and what started out as just 'knowledge for knowledge's sake' eventually led me color correcting a weekly show.

It's nice to see how fcp and avid mc are the gold standard. I don't think the current econmy can support 3rd or 4th editing product.

"The Avid" is like "The Apple" when you mean "Media Composer" (not Avid DS, or until this week Avid Liquid) and "Final Cut Pro".

Sorry, personal pet peeve right now. Avid makes lots of products - most of them NOT Media Composer.

:)

Hi, Shane!

After recently getting caught up on your podcasts, I found myself reading this and hearing it in my head in your speaking voice!

This is not just a good, but also an invaluable suggestion. I, too, am an Avid-trained editor from the early '90s.

I just had a meeting with an old client from my staffer days and very well might be picking up my first new Avid client in about 5 years. (Luckily I've had a steady Avid client all along...so I'm not all that rusty)

Great post! Thanks for your commitment to all of us!
