Um, I wasn't defending cutting resources for post-production organization. I was only trying to explain that sometimes things don't come in from the field as organized as they should be because the people in production (not post) are barely able to make it through the day, given the demands that are being made of them. I'm not saying it's right, but it's the reality. You can only ask people to do so much when consistently working 12-16 hour days and running to shoot, shoot, shoot. Try shooting a feature in 10 days outside in the cold.

I understand that many places are getting squeezed financially but the "we don't have enough time" or "we don't have enough money" excuses drive me nuts. Video is your company's life blood. Find the time to make sure your life blood is properly taken care of.

Ugh, so many people are willing to save a nickel today even though it will cost them a quarter tomorrow.

ahh...i hate unorganized footage. At my work they have TERABYTES of unlabeled footage...just tossed onto G-RAIDS.

I don't understand why they can't hire interns if they think they can't pay for it. Trust me, kids these days would kill to get there foot in the door that way

True Tom, very true. Organization...in depth...isn't something you do for live sporting events, or quick news stories. But those are exceptions. If you are working on an NFL film all about the Superbowl, and you are capturing the film they shot...there will be organization. And a news magazine like 20/20...those are docs, so organization. For the quick news story, there isn't much footage to deal with, and you have very tight deadlines. So those types of production are excluded...they are exceptions.

Lack of resources, Craig, is a big excuse companies toss out. Well, it is a poor excuse. If there is no assistant, I need to then look at the footage, and I need to ensure that I can find the footage I am looking for. If I organize it first, that means that I save a lot of time later searching for it, or just forgetting the perfect shot because I can't find it. Adding one day to organize will save many many hours.

You are so correct. I love editing now as I am editing and not trying to get organized as I go. Love editing and edit by getting super organized. This from a very disorganized person.

Shane- In my experience, on the production side, lack of file organization is usually due to a lack of resources. People working in production are squeezed in so many ways already.....

Your post is right on the money. However I can think of two exceptions:

1. Short turn around news, where the media is routinely burned

2. Single day sports events, when the highlight compilation at the end of the day is usually obvious and still fresh to memory

And even in these two cases, organization makes things smoother, but usually prior (news producer/reporter has good notes for the edit) or after (Sports PA has good timecode notes and the producer has a list of plays and angles he/she wants preserved.) A pro editor in these fields hopes for that help from others, but has to be able to work without them.
