Personally, I really like the XDCAM disc workflow as it gives you the speed and nonlinear aspects of tapeless while still giving you a physical medium suitable for shelving or shipping just like tape. Unfortunately we are shooting a mix of HDV, XDCAM EX, and direct to disc (either DVCPro HD or ProRes) where I am at now and the asset management is an on going challenge.

[...] Two posts ago I talked about needing to deliver a project offlined with FCP as an Avid project file with Avid media. So my plan was to convert the project with Automatic Duck Pro Export 4.0, recapture with Avid and then color correct with the Avid so that I had an Avid Project with Avid media to deliver. Yes, I knew that the Avid Media Composer didn’t have the best color correcting controls (well, ones that I am really not familiar with), as they lack secondaries and the ability to do vignettes. But, I thought I could manage this anyway.
Agreed it is crazy. 1/10th of the price will get you pretty darn close to a full Nitris DX Media Composer bay. It makes me wonder why more companies don't buy their own equipment since MC 4.x is out. For what you rent a bay for 15 weeks you can own your own in a lot of cases if you are smart about it.

I digress though. All of these "unknown" things keep us in jobs.

SO many people hold on to tape formats. And one of my biggest pet peeves of late is so many production companies are STILL using very old Avids. Now, I'm OK with that, as long as they use them for the formats they are designed for. But trying to use a Meridian when you shoot P2? That means that they need to dump to tape, then capture that tape...pretty much NIXING the whole point of tapeless. Or they shoot HDCAM, but then dub to DV then capture...more tapes, more time, more $$$. Money that can be used to get NEWER Avid's (not every one needs a capture card!)...you can get 6 for the price of an old meridian. MORE!

Too many places here trying to wring every last ounce of life from their Avid's (because they spent $150,000 on them) and do all sorts of crazy things to get current camera tech to work with them. Nutty.

It all boils down to tapes unfortunately. I think people are scared by any new workflow. "We know how to digitize tapes for offline and online them." This seems to be the mentality. Plus with tapeless you have to have the latest versions of Avid and a "somewhat" new version of FCP to take full advantage of the workflow. In LA people are still using Meridians and a few AVBV's. In the next few years we will see which formats will die and which will become dominant. XDCAM disc's I expect will replace tapes, while solid state recording cameras will only get better and better as our compression advances. But there will always be that company who will hold on to tape for as long as they can even if it means sacrificing image quality.

Yeah, I'm getting darn spoiled with COLOR. Color Correcting on an MC will be so limiting.

But I agree with HDV vs XDCAM. XDCAM is a MUCH superior format. HDV is so darn ugly and full of artifacts I am SHOCKED that networks accept it.

If it wasn't that the latest FCS really intergrated with Color in a much better and more sane fashion... I'd be seriously tempted to check things out. But that Deck + FCP is impossible, I've ran into the same issues.

Hopefully though the horrible yuckiness that is HDV will be going away soon in favor of XDCAM-EX which is such a superior, cheaper (counting Asst. Editor time), and better format. If only networks understood that we can give them data tape backups, and didn't insist on having tapes of every single shoot day. (Recently I've had networks say they would rather shoot HDV over XDCAM-EX).

Looking at the latest releases from Avid and Adobe, Apple is REALLY starting to lose their foothold here. FCP8 better be one hell of an upgrade.
