Yes, I know of that option. The issue still remained that it was an HDV timeline with I-Frame footage in it. That was causing issues with editing. That was the first thing I tried...but thanks!

Shane,

in fcp 7 there's a menu in sequence settings where you can tell hdv & xdcam projects to render in prores. Makes working in hdv and xdcam bearable.

I basically specialize in online shows like that out here in NYC. And budgets have gotten so small that conforms are completely out of the question.

Might capturing in HDV and then transcoding to DV and reconnecting your clips to the format needed at that specific moment not be a faster solution? Then you have double the size, but that should still be reasonable.

OK, let me hit all of these points:

Phil...we tried native HDV, but when mixing in the stock footage and still moves, the rendering process REALLY slowed down. And we would crash frequently. Mixing of the formats most likely. And since I would have to recapture anyway to go to COLOR, we decided on DV.

Mark...when I choose the Offline RT HD, I don't get full raster dimensions. I get 384x216. Do you make a custom setting for that? I know you all are the KINGS of the offline/online workflow. And yeah, we add REEL NUMBERS to the stills, because we need to track their source mainly, for ordering purposes. But it helps when media managing.

Michael...yeah, storage is cheap, unless you are dealing with a Fibre CHannel RAID. Then adding a few TB costs a few thousand dollars.

I really wished that we switched to FCP 7 in the summer, so that the last half of the shows would be ProRes Proxy, but that didn't happen.

Shane,

The "off-line RT" setting now has an "HD" version which takes care of the "resizing" issue. We've been using it
for quite some time now, and it works well. Remember when media managing stills, you MUST have a reel number associated with the media or it will not work.

I would imagine the decision to purchase more storage is up to the "man in charge". I'm sure FCP 7 would also be a welcomed investment.

Shane,

Not so long ago you gave me a good natured ribbing for still using the "old school" offline-online workflow. this was on the Cow. Well, it happens to the best of us:)

I realize that you'll save a lot of storage by offlining DV rather than ProPres. But with storage so cheap today, isn't that cost more than offset by the expense of all the extra time in online?

Phillip, I'm guessing it's because he wants to get out of the HDV codec ASAP. Ideally to ProRes, but since they have storage issues DV Anamorphic is the next best option for Offline untill they upgrade to FCP 7 and the ProRes Proxy.

I don't get why you go from HDV (19 or 25 Mbits/sec) to DV Anamorphic (also 25 Mbits/sec) to "save space". Space used would be the same but you've dropped from HD to SD.

In order to get into an all-I-frame codec? I be a little confused. :)
