I know a few people who have about 10 times that many files on the desktop. (I am not one of them.)

I have been extremely fortunate to have worked under and learned from some of the best television editors around. I have always been told to only have two things on my desktop: 1. The Hard drive Icon 2. a "Desktop Access folder", other than that everything else should be placed appropriately on the externals.

YES!
I hate it when i have to finish up another editor's work and their workflow is all over the place!
But it's also because of these other untidy editors that I learn to keep my own projects neat and tidy.
My desktop has nothing on it at all except for a few temp folders.

This is so important, yet I see so many editors falling into this trap. I can't count the number of times I have been handed a project only to find out that there were files left on a desktop, or music that was sitting in an iTunes library folder somewhere. It is frustrating to say the least. I have a few tips on organization in a series I'm writing on my blog. There's one here http://bit.ly/O63ME on file organization, and one here http://bit.ly/1jLVv2 on bin organization.

Shane, I completely agree. I think the simplest thing to do is make a folder per project and once you start, change all the capture scratch, rendering, auto save, to that folder. Any additional media should be placed in that folder as well. I'm the only one who edits my projects, but having media scattered all over my drive doesn't help me at all.

Great post, I think it's a very important to be organized if you want to be a successful editor.

At least he used color coding in places....

But if nothing else, having a lot of stuff on your desktop really slows your machine down. Don't believe me? Get After Effects to export a couple of hundred frame image sequence to your desktop (as I accidentally did once) and watch your machine turn to molasses.

Dude, after spending years in the vault and as an AE I feel your pain. I work w/about a dozen other editors and getting everyone to adhere to organizational standards is like herding cats. We've come a long way though. When i first started working here they didn't even number their tapes...
