[...] Your sequence setting is what you tell it. 1080i, 720p, 525i…whathaveyou. And whatever clip you add to that that ISN’T that format, gets scaled to that format…using a filter called a MOTION ADAPTER. This add interpolation to match the sequence settings, and this is added automatically when you add new footage that doesn’t match. And there are all sorts of interpolation modes…these are all user selectable. read more… [...]

True...to be on the SAFE side, always make sure you transcode to a common format. This is for all those people who get stuff thrown at them, from all sorts of cameras. Which, unfortunately, is all to common. Or what happens in inexperienced people get all sorts of formats and don't know what to do with them.

I am in favor of erring on the safe side too. But I am awfully tempted to download the demo and throw all I have at it to test. But for output all I have is an SD Mojo...so I am hampered there.

I hate be skeptical, but I don't this is something that you can say is fool proof. At some point, under some strange combination of events this will fail. What Avid is doing is so complicated that it is bound to break down at some point. Pixel just don't like being scaled and mixing and matching field orders and frame rates will at some point yield an unpredictable result. IMO, if you want to play it safe, conform everything to match the timeline in advance of editing.

MUCH better. Avid MC automatically adds a plugin that is designed to do this upscale in very smart ways. It isn't just scaling it and then repeating a frame.

So I assume Avid's 'open timeline' implementation is much better than FCP's?
