Have you heard of or checked out the MOTU HDX-SDI? (http://www.motu.com/video-products/hdx-sdi) It seems to claim direct from camera capture.

So sad, but true. The headaches of an editor.

I was planning on hooking up a camera via hdmi to avoid the awful avchd codec, the problem is I'm under the impression you can't capture 1080 prores on the fly, only 720 using dvcpro HD - however, it sounds like it MAY be possible. I guess I'll have to get my own mini and test it out myself. Thanks for all your help, great blog btw.

It can make a difference. Here's why. Many cameras have good sensors...nay, GREAT sensors. Full raster signals are possible with many cameras (even HDV ones, like the V7U). Then that great image is recorded onto HDV tape, and it falls to crap! Now anamorphic, now 4:2:0, now GOP. UGH!

But connect that camera to a capture device like the MXO2 or AJA I/O HD (or to the new AJA KI PRO), and you are recording your footage FULL RASTER, to ProRes directly. 4:2:2 color space.

Now, I don't have the HPX-170 anymore to test SDI out of this to the box, I only have limited access to an HVX-200, that has Component out only.

And I don't have access to the V7U to test either...darn it all. I see the image feed from that camera to an on set monitor and it is GREAT. And this is what the director sees...so when I say "Gah, that camera sucks, the image is horrid and it breaks up," the director is confused. "I didn't see that at all. It looked great." Then they come into my bay and look at it and go "My God, what happened? Did that happen when we captured to ProRes, I though that was a great codec?"

No, that's what happened when you shot to HDV tape.

But, I digress.

Nice. I would be curious as to a raw camera capture vs acquiring from an already recorded form (in this case tape) - I wonder if it makes a difference?

Those options aren't available yet...no new FCP 7 drivers.

Update... I was able to get one full hour of ProRes 422 captured without a dropped frame.
