I want features that should of been implemented 2 years ago, like advanced markers and speed control features that would of saved me hours of work.

I don't know how Prores is intel only, I have the new Prores codecs on one our G5's exporting a sequence to Prores 4444 right now.

I'm not trying to be cynical,just saying apple is looking flimsy. I have a right to be disgruntled with this, not mention Shake being kicked to the curb.

Just sayin...

Apple no longer makes the G5. They are now working on INTEL models. The software might contain code for the PPCs as they just added features, they didn't re-write everything. Not like iMovie 08, which cannot work on a non-intel no matter WHAT you do. No, they just didn't TEST it on the G5s...so they do not know how it will respond and they will not support it. There is a hack out there to get the FCS 3 to install onto a PPC...just edits a plist to allow it to install. But would you trust machines that you make money on if you did this? Especially if you get ZERO support from Apple?

I wouldn't.

And what features do you want? Most features are Intel only anyway, like proRes.

So what I am to do if I want the new features of this update but have a G5?

It seems apple is dropping G5 support, but the software still works on G5's.

What's up with that?

Hey Shane, I'm new to your blog, avid listener to your podcasts.

We have 4 G5's here that purr like kittens, kinda upset about the intel only update.

Apparently the coding on FC3 (or 2009) still has G5 architecture.

There is an installer online that actually lets you install FCS3 on G5's (after deleting some plist files)

Probably against apple licensing, but hey, don't punish me for having an older computer right?

I've never worked in a place that had the latest Avid software. They're always a few years behind. My last gig was on Adrenaline 2.something and my current gig is on MC Soft 2.7.7. As long as you can still get your work done and get a cut out the door, the latest and greatest isn't necessary.

Yeah, time to go scrounging for FCS2 out there. There should be more than a few places still stocking it. Using that and a G5…you can get GOOD use out of those machines for years yet. So many people not realizing this and thinking that now that FCP 7 is out they are stranded and that FCP 6 will no longer do the job.

I know places STILL using Avid Meridians on G4s running OS9…running like champs.

Hey, I'm not whining about it being Intel only, just kicking myself for not upgrading to FCS2 on my system and for not making all of my clients with G5s upgrade their systems.

If I act quickly I can probably pick up a copy and at least get a few more years out of my G5 before moving on. I spent a lot on mine, and some of my clients spent even more on their systems. No need to dump them for MacPros and FCP7 just yet. That is especially true for people with G5s that use PCI-X since they can't bring any PCI cards to a newer system. Those with PCIe (like me) can still get cards like the Kona LHi and take them to a MP when we're ready to move up.
