I see the same nameless media thing quite often with still that we've imported.

Also, the media file names are often very confused on things like stills and QT movies in sequences we've moved from Avid to FCP with Automatic Duck. FCP normally (but not always) has no file name for it, and often the name shown on the offline still is wrong, or a repeat of one that has preceded it.

Personally I'd really like to see FCP offer an option when importing files to have them copied to a local media drive (say on the Scratch Disk like captured media) - as we often import files from the network or other locations, and it's a pain to have to copy them somewhere local first, then import.

What I'd really like to see is FCP implement a media database of sorts that could be used to track available media a little more intelligently.

Hey Shane, Xavier here, from downstairs....
We've had the exact same problem in the 3 bays I work in.
We used to bring the converted CD cam footage from an external HD into the project they belonged to by simply dragging the project and the media onto the fiber channel drives.
Now I know why we've had this problem of missing media. FYI I beat you on one thing: I had to reconnect 489 missing files!!!
I'll experiment your trick on the next show.
Cool!

THis makes you question Apple's committment? The fact that they fixed the media manager to enable this sort of move to work flawlessly...fixing it...shows committment.

Again, Avid has had years more experience than FCP, and Avid version 5.5, the version that I first started on, had some pretty big media issues.

Ahhhh it's FCP's crappy media management rearing it's ugly head. This is one of those little workflow issues, problems, bugs whatever that has existed in FCP or a long long time. Why hasn't Apple fixed this over all these years? It's tiny things like this that make me question Apple's commitment to FCP. Pro Res, Motion 3D, Livetype and Color are wonderful things but there is a list of these little things a mile long that Apple hasn't fixed in version after version after version. Now my blood pressure is up on a relaxing saturday morning.... thanks Shane!

The editor was new to FCP...mainly an Avid guy. Thought that when you imported that it does what an Avid does, which is imports it as footage and moves it to the SAN.

He knows now.

I know people who hate media manager and missing media enough to plop a esata card in the machine and edit from a portable drive. One for each episode or client.

I hate it when that happens. I die a little inside when I get missing media prompts. :-)

I never trusted Media Manager in Final Cut but I'm glad Apple finally improved it. Management was the one thing Avid had going for it.

So why is the other editor storing things locally? Why not just keep it on the SAN from the start and avoid this headache all together?
