We won’t be renting a digibeta deck. Beta decks are far cheaper. And the dubbing VHS and DVD screeners to DV is a good idea. But I still think I will be getting one as I think the time saved from dubbing will make it worth while.

Why do you need an A to D? What analog source will you need to capture from, Beta SP? Why not just use a Digi deck for ingest? That way you can still capture from SP tapes, but everything will go in over SDI. If you are needing the A to D for VHS screeners of stock you should just have an AE or PA dub them all to DVCAM first. You shouldn’t need to spend money on the A to Ds. I’ve been in many facilities without an analog deck in sight and they seem to get by just fine.

Excellent post, Shane. I cannot count the amount of hours and days I have spent screwing around resolving issues that have nothing to do with getting the work done but, nevertheless, prevent you from doing it.

Ah, but I have the Tiger install disk, so I will be installing that and getting rid of Leopard.

You are a brave, brave man. I have a G5 and am holding out on buying a Mac Pro because it will come with Leopard which means I will have to upgrade EVERYTHING to Leopard. I run Xsan too and I know it will be a nightmare, particularly with Leopard as new as it is now. So I am leaving it as long as possible

P.S. In my office, we don’t have internet access on the editing machines at all. Any internet-based file transfers are performed via laptop. This is intentionally inconvenient to make sure that it is not used unnecessarily.

Cheers Shane, thats how we have it set up for 50 machines on FCP 5. Update everything beginning of the semester and then nothing till the next (after testing all updates on single machine) and works perfect.

That definately helps, and that is what we do (part of the “details I won’t be getting into” areas). But people still install odd applications and we need to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Shane, one suggestion I have is to keep separate “admin” and “editor” accounts on the machines. This completely removes the problem of someone installing “non-kosher” software because they’ll lack the login/pw to do so.
