On the down side of a do it yourself solution is that when you upgrade from one OS to another, such will be the case when you go from 10.4.10 to Leopard that you need to upgrade your drivers & firmware also or you could experience data corruption. With solutions like CalDigits' when you purchase their products they update the drivers and firmware on their website so all you have to do is download & install them to prevent data corruption from happening.

Hey Shane

Totally agree with the backup vs redigitise

I just bought an unbranded FW800 SATA Raid enclosure with 2 removable HDD trays + 2 spare.

I've put the new 1TB Mitsubishi SATA II Drives in each (nice performance too).

I'm in the process of backing up my 8 SATA II Channel home built 4TB RAID.

The plus side is cost is lower as each tray is only £12 and I can just buy the size HDD I need to backup a project. This gets stored in the tray baggy with some silica gel in, then popped in a box on the shelf.

Its a cheaper alternative to buying a complete external HDD unit for backup.

If you're interested in the mech:

http://www.span.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=19_1302_1324&products_id=7944&osCsid=055d9699e93ef8c14332a083a2e2226f

Couldn't find a US reseller but I'm sure there are loads or at least similar models.

I'm not going to run this as a RAID at the moment, only backup - although I am tempted to test it on the MBP with RAID 0 on some laptop HD editing...

If it works well I'll post it on LAFCPUG.

CalDigit S2VR Duo. And my Dark Tower home-built RAID.

Then I use the G-Raids for backup. But looking to get an OWC Mercury Elite Pro 2TB FW drive for backup too. Since I now have more than one project running at one time. So One project on the Tower, another on the Duo..backed up to G-Raids and Mercury Elite Pro.

It's nice that drives are getting bigger and cheaper. What type of raid & drives do you use for your main media drives?
